“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

Use-what-you-have hospitality

We have the African Children’s Choir coming to perform at our church soon. Although that is something we would normally be excited to attend, in light of our recent decision to adopt an orphan from Africa, neither hell nor high water will prevent our attendance this year. About a week ago, our church bulletin noted that there were still a number of choir children still needing host homes, and I jumped on it immediately.

Our home isn’t huge and it’s pretty full with five family members and their toys. In such cases it’s easy to say hosting should be for those with peacefully decorated guest bedrooms and older children. We don’t have a guest bedroom, but we do have two bathrooms, enough space for sleeping bags and the willingness to host graciously. I believe God calls us to be good stewards of what He has given us, whatever He has given us, even if Charlie (or Charlotte) Churchgoer in the pew next to you seems to have better means to meet the need. And perhaps Charlotte doesn’t have the gift of hospitality.

I called the coordinator the next day and discovered that she had already been overwhelmed with offers to host the kids. So maybe next year. In the meantime, I’m still going to try to use my resources to be hospitable.

As long as my guests don’t mind sleeping on an inflated mattress in the playroom.
