I used to carry the massively huge mother-of-all-diaperbags. With three kids under two, all in diapers and all prone to needing a change of clothes on any given outing, it was necessary for awhile. It was a hassle though, and for a time we didn’t do much going-out.
Now that the girls are older, they carry their own stuff. For each child, we purchased a mini-backpack and had their name embroidered on it. It’s just big enough for a diaper, change of clothes, sippy cup, snack and a lovey-doll, but not so big that they can’t carry it. If you keep it light, even an 18 month old can wear the backpack, and are usually very proud to do so. Now the kids love to pack their own backpacks when we go to a friend’s house or church, and I’m not the one carrying it all. It also limits how much stuff they can fit, and I’m not the bad guy for telling them they can’t bring all twenty-five of their favorite stuffed animals.
It’s not the ultra-frugal way to go (the bags were $15-$20 and the embroidery was $5) but you can ask for it for a birthday or baby shower gift for your child. There are enough colors for each kid to have their own, even for the biggest families. My kids have really enjoyed theirs!

Very cute and smart idea! Thanks for the tip!
Great idea! I just downsized from a gigantic diaper bag to a much smaller version for my son. I think I may try the backpack for my son soon.
I’ve tried similar things, but I have bad luck with bags in general. They just seem to break within a week or two around here. It’s a really good idea if you can spend the money for a good one though.
Awesome idea! Thanks!!
Awesome idea!
Nice idea! Great way for moms with new little ones to give their toddlers something to do for “helping”
And in this case, it really is a help!
Fab idea…..I have done a similar idea for trips.
My 2 year old loves to carry a little purse around or try to carry my diaper bag. I’m going out this weekend to buy her a backpack of her very own. Thanks for the idea!
