If you’ve been following along in hopes of doing something similar to our independent intercountry adoption, you should know that we’ve discovered that
proxy adoption is illegal in Zambia.
This means we will find another way to work with the necessary three or more weeks in Zambia. E only has two weeks of vacation, and the folks keeping our children cannot keep them for a month, so we are going to find another way to complete our adoption other than spending three or more weeks in Zambia. Right now this means we will probably
1) Receive our referral and fly to Zambia for court,
2) Get the paperwork (birth certificate, passport, visa) process started,
3) Have our child(ren) fostered for a week or two while we fly home,
4) Return to Zambia when the paperwork is ready, and bring the child(ren) home.
Yes, this is tedious, yes it adds the cost of another plane ticket, and yes, it will break my heart to leave my new child(ren) in Zambia for a few more weeks until their paperwork is ready. But we do not currently see another way to complete an adoption from Zambia, and we are not willing at this time to abandon Zambia for another country with a shorter timeframe.
