Bloom where you’re planted

Yin and yang

My daughters, unbidden, just cleaned up the entire living room and playroom and asked me to vacuum. All toys were in the toybox, all books on the bookshelf, all clothes in the laundry basket, all shoes on the shelf, all cushions on the couch. I was in awe, and told them so. They glowed with pride and childhood initiative. I glowed with pride and parental accomplishment, and pulled out the vacuum cleaner while they scattered.

Over the roar of the vacuum cleaner, I didn’t hear Lou’s yelling from the bathroom. When I unplugged to survey the gorgeous expanse of spotless carpet, I finally heard her hysterical cries for help. Upon opening the door, I beheld the ocean of my child’s independence. In her zeal to further assert her initiative, Lou had wiped her bottom all by herself… with an entire roll’s worth of toilet paper…
